The Abbey Gates in Bury St Edmunds was the starting point of todays ride. Conditions were ideal for winter cycling with a temperature of 6 degrees and no wind. By 0930, 5 riders had assembled for the off and after a ceremonial fly past in front of the Abbey Gates for a photo, the route led us into Eastgate where Chairman Paul B was intercepted during his dash to make the start.
Ride Leader Mike B led us through the cycle paths of the Moreton Hall estate and out to Rougham where Dick B managed to pick up a rear wheel puncture. Once repaired we were a little behind schedule so re-routed to Bradfield St George, Sicklesmere and Great Welneatham as we made our way to the coffee stop at The Maglia Rosso cafe.
There was a constant stream of comings and goings at The MagRoss but we were turned around efficiently and were joined for coffee by curfew buster Gerald L.
Riding to Lunch
With everyone refreshed, the route now took us east again to Bradfield St Clare and Felsham before turning southwest and passing through Cockfield Green to The Horseshoes at Cockfield. Nethergate Brewery’s “Hair of the Dog” was the tipple preferred by the majority and it appeared to slip down a treat.
After lunch, the majority made their way back to Bury St Edmunds whilst John M and Paul B headed northeast for home.
Many thanks to Mike B for leading; the next outing is on 17th January starting at Nowton Park.
