Thursday 04/05/2023 – Cambridge Start

Nick (Lead) & Dewi met up at the Newmarket Road Park & Ride, Cambridge and set off on the excellent segregated cycleway (NCR 51) away from the City and headed out into the Cambridgeshire flat lands via Stow cum Quy and Lode following very minor roads and Droves. Saw a Marsh Harrier en-route before arriving at Wicken Fen Nature Reserve for a Coffee and Cake stop at the Docky Hut Cafe.

We were joined there by David who had cycled the 45 miles from Debenham to join us (!). We then followed the cycle way which runs through the Reserve and followed some old Droves through the fen land. One short section was very rough & rutted. ( would be avoided if we did this route again!). We re-joined more major roads in Fordham and made our way via Isleham & Freckenham before stopping at La Houge Farm Shop & Cafe near Chippenham for our Lunch stop.

Clearly a very popular Café with a great selection of food and impressive cake offering. After Lunch David set off back to Debenham ( clocking up an impressive 102 miles for the day).

We made our way back to Cambridge via Exning, Burwell , Reach & the Swaffham’s before joining the Cycleway opposite Anglesey Abbey for the cruise back to our start.

48 miles.

Tuesday 25/04/2023 Ride

Stella, Dewi & Nick ( Lead) rode from Skyliner through Bury on NCR 51 and via Barrow where we were joined by Dick then to Kentford for a Coffee and Cake stop at Breadline. The next leg took us via Risby , Hengrave, Timworth, Troston & Sapiston to Bardwell and a lunch stop at the Grumpy Goat. Unfortunately we timmed our arrival badly and had a longish wait for food – which was good. Returned to Skyliner via Ixworth, Pakenham & Thurston. Called in to see Mike on the way back. Was great to see him and have a catch up.

Walked through Abbey Gardens on the way through Bury.
Mill Lane, Hengrave.

Thursday Ride from Fakenham Race Course 20/04/2023

Dewi (Lead), Nick , Stella & Frank met up at Fakenham Race Course for a Thursday away ride. Very strong wind coming straight off the North Sea made for a chilly and testing start to the ride. Reward was a stop at the excellent O’Brennans Cafe in Great Walsingham for Coffee and Cakes. Also a stop for a group of original Mods on their Scooters.

Lunch was Fish and Chips from at Platten’s in Wells-Next-The-Sea which was excellent. The new touch screen ordering and payment system was testing and frustrating in equal measure! Rode through the grounds of Holkham Hall on the return leg. 40 miles in total.

Some of O’Brennan’s finest Pies – purchased these for later consumption – excellent hand made produce.
